Chapter 15: God's Covenant with Abram

Background History and Timeline: Genesis, traditionally attributed to Moses, was written around the 15th century BCE. It covers events from the creation of the world to the patriarchs of Israel.

Locations Mentioned: The chapter primarily focuses on the region of Canaan, where Abram resides.

Themes and Conflicts: Genesis 15 records God's reaffirmation of His covenant with Abram and the promise of descendants and land. It explores themes of faith, doubt, and the fulfillment of divine promises.

Main Characters: Abram (Abraham) and God are the main characters in this chapter.

Specific Passages:

  • Genesis 15:5-6: "And he brought him outside and said, 'Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.' Then he said to him, 'So shall your offspring be.' And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness."

  • Genesis 15:18: "On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, 'To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,'"

Explanation: Genesis 15 depicts Abram's encounter with God, where God reassures him of His promise to give him numerous descendants and the land of Canaan as an inheritance. Abram expresses his faith in God's promises, and God establishes a covenant with him.

The chapter highlights Abram's faith as righteousness and underscores God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It also introduces the concept of covenant, a binding agreement between God and His people.

Genesis 15 marks a significant moment in Abram's journey of faith, as he continues to trust in God's provision and guidance. The chapter lays the foundation for the unfolding narrative of God's covenant relationship with Abraham and his descendants.

Moses is traditionally attributed as the author of Genesis, including Chapter 15.

Religious Text

Gen 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Fear not, Abram, | am your shield; your reward shall be very great." Gen 15:2 But Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for | continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" Gen 15:3 And Abram said, "Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir." Gen 15:4 And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: "This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” Gen 15:5 And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." Gen 15:6 And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness. Gen 15:7 And he said to him, "| am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess." Gen 15:8 But he said, "O Lord GOD, how am | to know that | shall possess it?" Gen 15:9 He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." Gen 15:10 And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half. Gen 15:11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. Gen 15:12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. Gen 15:13 Then the LORD said to Abram, "Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. Gen 15:14 But will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. Gen 15:15 As for yourself, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. Gen 15:16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." Gen 15:17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. Gen 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your offspring | give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, Gen 15:19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, Gen 15:20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, Gen 15:21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites."
